So this girl was too busy paying attention to her coffee and didn't slow down as the lanes merged into one and nearly ran us off the road! And then she almost hit that Liberty in front of her as she was exiting. Once again, never a cop around when you need one.

This house is on Eden Lane and every year he goes all out for Halloween.

Every year he adds something new.

I heard some of the kids say "I know this house and I'm not going in there man!"

I can understand why they would say that.

We then headed over to the Country Club area, we went trick or treating in that area last year and had fun and there wasn't so many people like in other areas of town...what a difference a year makes! We got there about 8:00 and lots of the houses were already out of candy, but we made the most of it.

I was doing my thing, taking pics and this guy comes up and stands right next to me. Sorry dude, but I don't scream like a little girl.

I love this house! The fact that it's purple had nothing to do with it.

Thanks to my dear friend Cari over at Cari's Book Blog I knew that Banned Book Week was coming up and to commemorate the week and make people more aware that, yes people are still trying to ban books from our libraries, Jen over at I Read Banned Books is co-hosting a book hop to bring awareness to this subject and giving away some banned books along the way. So to find out more about the Banned Books Week Hop head on over to Jen's blog for more details.I was at my local library today to ~~pay my book fine~~ look for a new book to read, when I found out that my library is one of the 11,000 in the US that now support the Kindle so now I can check out a book from my local library even when I'm on vacation! #Winning! Just make sure you have your library card number handy and just an FYI if you're looking for any of the newer releases or popular titles, be prepared to wait. While I was there I noticed that the library had made a banned book display:

But Sounder?? I read that in school! So guess who will eventually read it too, whether it's on his school reading list or not! Isn't it better that our kids learn about these words from reading a book with meaning and having a parent-child conversation about what they've read rather than watching some movie or tv show that uses a slang word or phrase purely for ratings. And to prove, that yes there are some people that have nothing better to do than to find books to ban I leave you with this banned book:

I understand the schools are facing budget cuts and you may have to take a pay cut or that you may even lose your job altogether, but is that any reason to take away a 7 year old's lunch? And please explain to me how giving him a cheese sandwich is suppose to get him through the rest of the school day? Do you really think two pieces of bread with a thin slice of "cheese" in the middle falls under the guidelines of an appropriate lunch? Well let me tell you it doesn't and it isn't. That's why when I picked him up from his grandparents he had already had some chicken noodle soup, two ham sandwiches with pickles and on our way home we stopped at Sonic for a hot dog kid's meal and after he finished that off he had some strawberries, an apple and half an orange!

By the way I hope you enjoyed the visit from his grandmother this morning.

Dark Days in Texas

Harper Teen will be giving some lucky YA readers a chance to meet some of their favorite authors like Kimberly Derting, Ellen Schreiber, Cynthia Hand, Claudia Gray, and Courtney Allison Moulton at different events around the US which began today in San Francisco and ends in March in Miami, but there isn’t one single, solitary stop in Texas! Why Harper Teen, why?? Texas does things bigger and better so having a Dark Days of Supernatural event in Texas would be huge! Huge crowds, huge sales, huge publicity (hello you’re getting some right now!) And if your ~~excuse~~ reason for not bringing the tour to Texas is budget related then feel free to bring Kimberly Derting to Texas. What a great Valentine’s gift would that be?!? Wink, Wink. WF Elite Swim Team is a Crock!

I recently took our son to “try out” for the only swim team in our town (not to be confused with the school swim team) and no I wasn’t expecting him to make the actual team since on their website (which I will not post a link to because I am not going to promote them or their “team”) they say they have three teams one of which is the Transitional Team, here is their definition, word for word, of what the purpose of the Transitional Team does: The Transitional Team's purpose is to develop swimming and practice skills as well as endurance in the water in order to graduate swimmers to the WEST team.

Our son has been swimming since he was 6 months old, he knows how to swim. What he doesn’t know are the technical terms for each type of stroke there is or what kind of drills there are, but then isn’t that the purpose of this “transitional team”? Well after his “try out” with Coach Hogue (who kept reminding me off her extensive years of working as a teacher. I guess I should have asked her a teacher of what?) she told me, my dad and my son that he would be on the Transitional Team. She went so far as to get eye level with my son and ask how he felt about being on the Transitional Team! So of course our son was excited, finally he would be on a team where he could be taught the technical side of swimming. On the drive home that was all he could talk about how he had made the team, he didn’t even care that it wasn’t the actual team. He was just excited to be given the opportunity to swim.

And then my husband gets a call. Today one of the “ladies/moms” perhaps the “coach/teacher” herself called my husband and told him that our son needs to take swim lessons. I had already told her that he had taken swim lessons. So she starts to back pedal and say that she didn’t tell us that he would be on the transitional team and that he needs to go out and get swim lessons and learn the strokes and learn how to do the transitions at each end of the pool. Um isn’t that what your supposed “transitional team” is for??? When our son was doing his “try out” not once did he do a transition so you already knew that he didn’t know how to do it, but yet you told him and us he was on the transitional team and now a week later you tell my husband (who wasn’t there, how convenient for you) that our son doesn’t know how to swim and needs swim lessons and he doesn’t even know how to doggie paddle. Yes our son does know how to doggie paddle he just prefers to SWIM! I didn’t realize that the doggie paddle was an actual stroke performed during a swim meet.

This “team” practices at the Boys and Girls Club, but I hope they’re not affiliated with the Boys and Girls Club since one of the things that the Club says they are is “the positive place for kids” and there’s absolutely nothing positive about the experience we’ve had with this so-called “team”

Now I get it dearest city government. The only time you harass your citizens is when an old/crotchedy/bitchy neighbor has nothing better to do with his/her day then to call you and complain about the people who live on his/her block. Sure you'll send us a letter and threaten us with a $100 fine because our vehicles tire is an inch in OUR front yard, but having weeds and dandelions that look like they belong in a sci-fi movie or as my 6 year old put it "i think they're hiding Mighty Joe Young in there" is perfectly fine. Or did the city change the height that the your grass/weeds could reach before a city crew comes and cuts/mows it for you?

Lieutenant Ken Terry has been with the Wichita County Sherriff’s Office for twenty-five years and is battling cancer. He has incurred many medical expenses so his fellow officers with the Wichita County Sherriff’s Office will be holding a fundraiser to assist him. On Thursday, May 6 beginning at 11 am the Wichita County Sherriff’s Office will be serving up your choice of a hamburger or hot dog along with a bag of chips and a drink for only $5! Their will also be a Silent Auction during the lunch, which will be served from 11 am-1 pm. Come on out to the Wichita County Courthouse lawn on Thursday, May 6 and help someone who has served and protected the citizens of Wichita County for twenty-five years.

Wichita Falls Parks & Rec Kid’s Fishing Rodeo

Last Saturday was the city’s Kid’ Fishing Rodeo at Plum Lake, it was a bit cold and very windy out, but when my little fisherman wants to fish I take as many blankets as I can carry and head out! Luckily his daddy had set-up his tackle box the night before, since he had to work in the morning it was just going to be the two of us. We get out to the lake a little before 10 am and there are already lots of families that have staked out their spots around the lake. We finally find a spot and get our gear ready. And then a surprise! Daddy got off work early so he was able to help with the casting and hooking the worm. We didn’t catch anything that day mainly, we think, because the lake had just been stocked so the fish weren’t hungry. So here’s some pictures I took during our time out at Plum Lake.

Bad Weather is Coming

I didn’t see it, but apparently tonight there was a ring around the moon. Some people may not think anything of it, just a ring around the moon, but I know better. Bad weather is coming our way. I hope that this time around everyone is getting prepared. If you haven’t gone to the store already go tomorrow (Wednesday) stock up on water, milk, cereal, bread, food that will get you and your family through at least 3-4 days buy things that won’t spoil easily in case the power goes out. If you have medication you need on a daily basis and you’re almost out, don’t wait! Get it filled now! If you wait until Thursday to get all this done, it’ll be a mad house and I know I wouldn’t want to be out driving in icy conditions. Some good tips I got from FEMA’s website is to have rock salt on hand to melt the ice from your porch, sidewalk and driveway, sand to improve traction (also having some of these bags in your trunk/bed of truck will help if you have to drive out in the crazy weather that’s coming) and of course make sure to have a shovel if you didn’t get one during the Blizzard of 2009, also a good idea to have an ice scraper handy for your windshield if you don’t have a garage or carport for your vehicle. If we get the amount of ice they’re predicting there’s a good chance people will lose power, if you have a fireplace stock up on firewood, make sure your cell phone is fully charged – Energizer has a pretty nifty one I’m going to go look for at Walmart tomorrow. Another must is insulating your pipes. If you didn’t do that last month, I would say it’s a definite must now, we’re talking ice people! If you have an elderly or disabled neighbor go knock on their door and make sure they have a plan in case the power goes out if they don’t offer your assistance! And please don’t try to drive because do you really want to drive in conditions like this? The only reason to drive in this type of weather is if you lose power to your home and you have family or friends that still have power and you can go to their home. In that case be safe!

If you do have to be out there wear thermals under your clothes, put on a hat, throw on some gloves, wrap a scarf around your neck, put on a heavy coat, THE WORKS! Don't show any skin. You may think you look ridiculous, but at least you're protecting yourself and your family from possible frostbite!

Fiesta Patrias Parade

Saturday was the parade for the Fiesta Patrias. A two weekend event that celebrates Mexico’s independence from Spain, which actually happened on the 15th of September or Dieciséis de septiembre. The local high school bands marched in the parade along with some of the local elementary schools. Unfortunately not a lot of the community came downtown to see the parade (and you missed out on all the candy!), but I also didn’t see a lot of advertising for this event. Communication people! So if you want a great tasting gordita and some wonderful entertainment for the whole family add September 12 to your calendar the festivities start at 11 am and go until 10 pm the location is the Our Lady of Guadalupe church at 421 Marconi. There’s a program that starts at 5 pm and a concert that starts at 7 pm with Groupo Cobra.

What is going on with the Lucy Park Pond???

A few months ago the pond started to turn green, we thought it was just leaves that had blown into the pond, but eventually the green took over the entire pond. We had a good week of rain and the green seemed to disappear, but slowly it made it’s reappearance below are some pictures I took today.

The stuff is so thick these two Styrofoam cups didn’t sink!

Update this AM: as I was leaving for work this morning Parks and Rec was dragging the pond, but I'm not sure exactly why and I couldn't stick around to see what they were going to do. Still plan on calling and going home for lunch to see what the pond looks like in the afternoon. I also had someone from my Twitter followers tell me it looked like duck weed. I thought he was playing a Snoop Dog joke on me lol :) I Googled "duck weed" and it turns out it's some kind of protein that is good for ducks to eat. Go figure.

Fishing at Lake Arrowhead

Looking for something to do? How about a visit to Lake Arrowhead State Park. There’s different types of fish in the lake and plenty of areas to try your hand at catching “the big one” Of course if you have a boat you can add more fishing spots to try out. There’s covered tables to have a bar-b-que and spots to go camping if you ‘d like to stick close to home. Every year they have a fishing tournament for kids of all ages usually in June starting about 9 am and ending around 4. Believe me it can be quite exciting getting those fish in before the final bell!

In my opinion the docks are not the greatest spots to fish because then you may end up having to do what my hubby had to do in the picture above and fish for your rod!

Here’s a great spot: under a tree with some shade and on the bank. And yes fish have been caught by my two fishermen. Here’s one of the many:

So when I found out we would be on the road to Brownsville for my cousin's quincenera you better believe I looked for the nearest Borders or Target-they are the ones with the best DVD's-actually Target turned out to be the best. So anyway turned out there wasn't a store near 281 so I pre-ordered from iTunes brillant idea if it weren't for the fact that it took forever to download! Argh! Since I wouldn't be able to attend the midnight release I bought my shirt at Walmart before the trip and represented the Cullens! And you best believe when I found out Catherine Hardwicke was making a stop in Texas I tried to figure out where she would be and then force my hubby to deviate from our course! Turns out she was about an hour and a half from where I live but we were about 10 hours away from where she was sure wish Alice had been around before we started our trip!

In our family they somehow have ended up going to California. Why? I don't know. I'm from California so I don't know why I picked that place or maybe I do it is supposed to represent heaven after all and there are places in California that could be described as heaven.
The newest resident? Oscar. Joshua's beta. He's going to California to check on relatives who were involved in the train wreck. I know I should just rip off the band-aid and tell him Oscar died and even though he may understand I don't know if I'm prepared for that conversation!

Yes I forgot to post yesterday. That's what happens when you actually work at work. lol So this morning I had no breafast ditto for yesterday. For lunch today I had....

It was good but not great. I didn't have the mushrooms because I don't like mushrooms. I think what kept this from being great was the bread because you get a nice piece of chicken breast that doesn't quite fit in the bread so I had some left over that I ate on it's own and it was delish. The fruit was a piece of pineapple, strawberry (both of which I gave to Katie) and small slices of an apple. I ate the apple it was pretty good had a sweet taste because of the pineapple juice. I would order this again although I forgot...I did have some BBQ chips. I had to! The sandwich didn't come with any or fries! To drink? WATER!

No pics today, but I basically had the same breakfast as yesterday minus the sausage patty since I only cook those when Joshua is having breakfast with me. For lunch we went over to the in-laws where the master bbq'er made hamburgers & hot dogs. I thought I was going to be bad and have one of each but the hot dog wasn't the greatest and it was Ballpark so I thought it would be. I had planned on going back for seconds on the burger but someone beat me to the last bun. Just as well I guess lol. I almost had a Coke, but I stopped myself and had water. So satisfying. Just finished up snacking on watermelon. Delish!

I LOVE THEM!!! Especially Market Street the cashiers are always so friendly and are always nice to our son. When it's not to busy some of them will let him scan our groceries he loves that! It makes it fun for him to go grocery shopping with us. My husband loves the one on Old Iowa Park Road for obvious reasons-tortillas!
We could go to Walmart and save a couple of dollars, but the customer service isn't the greatest, some of the greeters seem to think they're working at Sam's and make you stop and hand over your receipt even though the alarm hasn't gone off-don't get my husband started on that one! Even though Walmart is trying to be green by selling reusable bags the cashiers act inconvenienced by the fact that they have to put your groceries in your reusable bags instead of plastic. Not at United! You're always asked "paper or plastic?" and when you hand over your bags instead not a single complaint! They're happy to see your reusable bags and you get a discount! Happy grocery shopping! At United I hope.

Everyone in my household had been waiting to see this movie. We were not disappointed! The movie gives adults something to think about-not only with our environment but with ourselves. It also gives us the opportunity to teach our kids about the world we live in and how the littlest thing can make a big difference. There's even a love story! And yes I did get a bit misty eyed. This is definitely a movie that needs to be seen at the movie theater don't wait go now!

This is a must if you have kids! Don't have any? Go see it anyway. It's hilarious! I laughed so hard I cried. I know the adults will try to figure out who the voices are for each character, but only for a minute then you realize you can just wait for the credits to roll. FYI for you Star Wars fans (that would be me) during the trailers there's an interview with George Lucas about the soon to be released animated movie about the Clone Wars. Coming out in August!

Movie Review

I forgot I have some movie reviews to mention! First up is Sex and the City the Movie. If you're a SATC fan this movie is a must! A shout-out to my husband who took me to see this movie since the only other fan I know is my cousin who is now living in Germany. I was worried at first because all the reviews that were coming in hated the movie. I should've known! If the critics hate it chances are you'll love it. It's SATC how could you not?!? I loved Charlotte in the movie she showed how ferocious she can be if you mess with her friends and she's not afraid to laugh at herself. The one disappointment for me was the direction that Samantha's plot line took-I won't say anymore 'cuz I don't like when people tell me what happens in a movie I haven't watched. Sufficed to say if you're a Samantha fan you may be a bit disappointed.

So it's been awhile since I posted and this post won't be very long either, but I had to show off my son's catch on Father's Day. He went with his daddy & Papa out to Lake Arrowhead very early on Father's Day and went fishing. The first catch of the day went to....Joshua! His first ever catch using his Pirates of the Caribbean fishing pole. :) His daddy didn't think his bass was a keeper, but we've since found out that it actually was a keeper. Then I found out that he just didn't want to have to clean it when he got home because goodness knows I wasn't going to clean the fish! Here's a pic of Joshua & his Papa with his prize bass.

My hubby asks me to bring him home a six pack and so I do. Then all I get is grief about the "mini beer" I've brought home. Do you really need more than 6 8 oz. beers? When I was checking out at Walmart this guy couldn't believe I was actually going home with 8 oz beers. I thought he was kidding...I guess not. So anyway Casey decided to go to the 7-11 & get some more beer. He tells me this while holding his 'minis' I thought he was going to try & exchange them.

The lovely City of WF is expanding a bridge & extending a road that leads to Walmart,but it hasn't been fun for the residents! I work on this side of town & occassionally need to go to Walmart for supplies, but instead of going back over the bridge. I have to nearly go back into town to get on 281 N to go back to the office. We went to watch Baby Mama last night. It was an early Mother's day lol and just an FYI Casey wasn't the only guy in there. It was a good movie. My favorite was Amy Poehler she had both of us LOAO! I also love her haircut, but I don't think it would work on me. The movie moves along and you're not wondering when will it be over? I wish they would've done more with "Oscar" though.

Today is our 6 year anniversary. I'm feeling a little sad though because Casey had to go to Dallas for some John Deere training, but he made a wonderful and mouth watering brunch before he left. I just wish I had a dishwasher for all the dirty dishes that were left behind. :) The picture above was taking this past December at Sheppard AFB. Joshua was the ring bearer for his aunt Jaymee's wedding. He looked so handsome in his suit and tie.
